His Royal Heinous, the “Overlord AIDS” with his ingenious – but scarcely foolproof – plan to defeat humanity; the warrior who believes that AIDS is a human enemy and sets out on his horse to find “him”; the young man who is too embarrassed to buy condoms and ends up with an armful of biscuits instead….
These characters – brought to life by some of Africa’s finest filmmakers – are the invention of young people in West Africa, the winners of a 1997 contest which invited young people under the age of 25 to come up with ideas for a series of short films about AIDS. The contest attracted 13,000 participants from Senegal, Mali and Burkina Faso.
Some of Africa’s most highly acclaimed directors are in the process of transforming the winning ideas into a series of short films, in collaboration with some of the continent’s finest musicians. Seven short films are ready to date. They are touching and extremely funny, and their message is one of hope, optimism and empowerment!
These top quality films are African-written, African-produced and African-directed. They will be available in a range of European and African languages and are distributed free of charge to television stations in low-income countries. The films will also be collected on a compilation video as a teaching resource for organisations and teachers.
